PHOTOGRAPHIC OPEN COMPETITION CATEGORIES
MEN - age 17 or older
WOMEN - age 17 or older
CHILDREN - Birth to 16 years
GROUP - 3 or more subjects
PET / DOMESTICATED ANIMAL - Must be in control of structured lighting in a studio or in an outdoor environment, where the owner or photographer has control of the animal. Examples may include, cat, dog, pet snake, horses, etc.
COUPLE - Must be people and no more than two (2).
REPORTAGE / PHOTOJOURNALISM - Images that illustrate an actual public or non-public event, live, an area of human interest, telling news that has meaning on the context or record of events, high impact, or lasting emotional response. Images that illustrate sporting events are included in this category.
ONLY basic color, brightness adjustments, cropping, burning and dodging are allowed. Only single capture images will be accepted. NO composites or multiple exposure images will be allowed. The original captured file (in RAW or JPEG) must be available if requested by the Image Chair.
ILLUSTRATIVE - Landscape images, Cityscapes, pictorials, abstracts, seascapes, urban, aerial images and all other images that don't pertain to the other categories
WEDDING - Images obtain/photographed during the wedding or reception event. Bridal sessions, engagement session not allowed.
WILDLIFE/NATURE - Images that contain natural subjects (not people) in the wild environment that the photographer does not have control over lighting and/or posing. Wild animals, insects, birds, flora-plants of a region, zoo animals, etc.
COMMERCIAL / ARCHITECTURE - Images for clients for a commercial purpose, headshots not allowed. Product photography, food, automobiles, buildings, interiors, real estate, industrial, advertising, etc.
STILL LIFE - This category is for predominantly inanimate objects with controlled lighting and settings. Subjects may be flowers, fruit, sport equipment, antiques, toys, etc.
RAW - The intention of this category is to evaluate the art created in-camera without any post-production applied, including RAW adjustments in or out of the camera. Only RAW files maybe entered in this category. The purpose is to allow the entry of non-manipulated, camera-native imagery. This category is designed for images which come straight from thecamera. You must enter your unedited, unmanipulated RAW image.
SCORES ONLY - This category is for the additional images that are not eligible for awards in the
ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP - All additional images that are not included in the total four (4) images for Photographic Open and/or Artist competitions must be entered here. All entries by SUSTAINING MEMBERSHIPS, STUDENT MEMBERSHIP and NON-MEMBERS must be entered into this category.
ALBUMS - Single Maker
A photographic album, or photo album, is a collection of photographs, generally in digital book form. Subject matter could be an event category such as a Wedding, Parade, etc, or a NON-event such as a storybook, Senior Album, etc. You must select which category your album pertains to; Event Album or Non-Event Album. The album is judged as a whole but every image within the album is evaluated using the 12 Elements of a Merit Print.
ARTIST COMPETITION - Masters and NON-Masters all compete together in this competition. There are no categories in the Artist Competition.
ARTIST - Entries may be created in various artistic mediums. Photographs may be used in this category in creating an entry, but it is not a requirement. Entries may include freehand drawing or painting in traditional or digital applications. Entries can include stock photography, photographs, or artwork from another artist (s) with written consent to use those sources. Documentation may be requested by KPPA before, during, or after the review. If an entry, in the good-faith opinion of the KPPA Image Chair(s) , violates copyright, trademark, or any other applicable law and cannot be proven otherwise, that entry shall be disqualified and merits revoked if issued.
